Once again, Openbox saves the day as the best window manager for any desktop environment.
These instructions seem to work under Linux and FreeBSD.
- Install dconf-editor
- Install Openbox extras, optional obkey, obconf (if you would like them installed, but not essential to run Openbox)
- Open dconf-editor and navigate to /org/mate/desktop/session/required-components/ and change the value of ‘marco’ to ‘openbox’
- Go to your control centre and the Startup dialog. Add Openbox to the startup que
- Press enter and quit program, followed by a log-out or restart
