Using openbox as your window manager in MATE desktop

Once again, Openbox saves the day as the best window manager for any desktop environment.

These instructions seem to work under Linux and FreeBSD.

  • Install dconf-editor
  • Install Openbox extras, optional obkey, obconf (if you would like them installed, but not essential to run Openbox)
  • Open dconf-editor and navigate to /org/mate/desktop/session/required-components/ and change the value of ‘marco’ to ‘openbox’
  • Go to your control centre and the Startup dialog. Add Openbox to the startup que
  • Press enter and quit program, followed by a log-out or restart
